Soap nuts are the dried shells from the soapberry shrub and tree. The inside of the berry contains as much as 37% saponin. When you put saponin in water and shake you get foam thus reducing the attraction of water to water. Saponin can grab greasy dirt from our body and clothes and when we rinse, it all goes down the drain.

I suffer from severe sensitive skin. Even the "free" laundry detergents were aggravating my skin. I made a few lifestyles changes including my laundry detergent. Now I use my homemade recipe and wool dryer balls.  Just like commercial detergents, sometimes you need a boost for stains or heavy soiled items. 

I reviewed samples of soap nuts & Extreme 18x liquid concentrate by NaturOli. I used both items as an extra boost to my detergent. I added one cap to a quart of my laundry soap recipe. I used 5 nuts per load in the drawstring bag.


The first two loads I noticed the colors were brighter, the fabric was softer but I had some odd stains that I didn't notice before. It resembled oil stains. I contacted NaturOli for advice. They never had this complaint before but they had a possible solution. Run an empty load on the hottest setting to wash the water lines into the washer. It was possible the soap nuts was loosing dirt from the lines. Honestly I was skeptical but I went ahead and used 10 soap nuts. Sure enough the yellow stains disappeared on future washes.


The soap nuts are good for 5-6 washes; just allow the bag to dry between loads. Since they came with two, I alternated between the drawstring bags. I was able to get a few more than 6 loads per bag. You can see the difference inside a used shell. The saponin is clear unused and slightly golden when used while the nutshell is brown. They are safe to use on cloth diapers and baby items!

• For Household Cleaning: Pour soap nuts liquid into a spray bottle. Use full strength or dilute as desired. Use for sinks, counters, floors, etc.

• For Windows and Glass: Fill a spray bottle with about 8 oz of water. Add a half-ounce of soap nuts liquid and a half-ounce of vinegar. Spray and then wipe clean with dry cloth.

• For Dishwashers: Fill the dishwasher soap dispenser with soap nuts liquid. Wash as usual. Tip: For extra sparkle, add a half-ounce of vinegar to the rinse dispenser or during the rinse cycle.

• For Hand Wash: Add about 2 tbs of soap nuts liquid to wash water and stir, or make a tea with your soap nuts muslin bag. Simply hand wash as usual.
