-Grate the soap and melt in a pot of boiling water.

-It doesn't matter how much b/c as you use the soap you dilute it.

-Once the soap is melted add the borax and washing soda SLOWLY. Use a stove fan. You don't want to inhale the Borax.

-Yes, it's safe diluted but not when it's inhaled.

-Fill one BPA Free plastic gallon bucket with the solution and fill with additional water. It will form a paste overnight.

-Next Day, Fill a quart container 1/4 with the solution and add hot water to fill. I use 1/2 cup per large load.

This is my 3rd revision and favorite. The previous recipe was made in April 2012 and it lasted till January 2013.

This is safe for HE machines. Fels Naptha does have a strong odor and I found it hard to cover with essential oils. It does fade after washing. I know many who grate castile soap and have excellent results.

For stains- Rub a bar of Fels onto the stain and let it sit for 20mins.
An alternative solution that also works is vinegar and a few drops of Blue ORIGINAL Dawn.

Prices from 2013
Washing Soda=.22 cents a serving
Borax=.22 cents serving
Fels =$.60 serving
Recipe cost=$1.04 for 400 Loads/Last approx 10 months.

How much did you save with this recipe?

  3. Wow, that's an amazing savings! We don't do scents in this house because of multiple allergies. Wish there was a DIY "free" version!

  5. This is different. Most laundry soap recipes I've seen lately are dry only. I'd love to make my own soap but I just don't have the storage to buy all the ingredients. Really neat to do though.

    1. Paula what would take up too much room? You could split the recipe with friends.

  6. I love DIY recipes. I love frugal recipes. I love green recipes. Alas, I live in a tiny apartment and have to use a laundromat so this will be bookmarked for later.
